Charles W. Chowning was born in Kentucky in June 1860, the son of C. R. and Nancy Chowning. He came to Montana as a young man in the 1880s and worked on the Montana Cattle Company's 79 ranch. About 1893 he married Jennie, daughter of William and Katherine Ennis of Ennis, Montana. He took over his father-in-law's general store and operated it until his death on April 16, 1934.
